Pasture-Raised Cornish Cross: The Best of Both Worlds

At TPA Ranch we've found the perfect balance between heritage farming methods and modern efficiency by raising Cornish Cross chickens on pasture. While this breed is typically associated with conventional production, we've adapted their care to create healthier birds and more flavorful meat through our pasture-based system.

Why We Choose Cornish Cross (And How We Raise Them Differently)

While heritage breeds have their merits, we've selected Cornish Cross because:

  • They efficiently convert feed to meat (reducing overall resource use)
  • Reach processing weight in just 8-9 weeks
  • Produce consistently plump, juicy meat

But here's how we do it differently than factory farms:

Our Pasture-Raising Protocol

  1. Protected Start: Chicks spend their first 3-4 weeks in a temperature-controlled brooder
  2. Daily Pasture Rotation: At 4 weeks, they move to fresh grass every morning in mobile pens
  3. Natural Diet Supplement: While they do require quality feed (NON-GMO), they get:
    • Fresh grass and bugs
    • Sunshine and exercise
    • Clean living conditions

The Pasture Difference You Can Taste

Our pasture-raised Cornish Cross offer:
✔ Better texture from daily movement
✔ Richer flavor from diverse diet
✔ Cleaner fat from fresh air and sunshine
✔ Peace of mind from humane treatment

Balancing Ethics & Practicality

We understand some folks prefer slower-growing breeds, but we've found our pasture-raised Cornish Cross provide:

  • Accessibility: Lower price point than heritage breeds
  • Consistency: Reliable results for our customers
  • Efficiency: More sustainable feed conversion

Availability & Ordering

Our pasture-raised chickens are processed at 8-9 weeks, yielding 4-7 lb birds with that classic plumpness but better flavor than conventional options.

Next processing date: End of May 2026

"All the juiciness you expect from chicken, with the ethical raising you deserve."

Pasture-Raised Heritage Turkeys: Tradition on Pasture

At TPA Ranch, we are raising 10 heritage turkeys the way turkeys were meant to be raised — on pasture, without shortcuts. While heritage breeds take longer to mature than conventional broad-breasted turkeys, the flavor and quality are unmatched.

Why We Choose Heritage Turkeys

We selected heritage breeds because:

  • They thrive on pasture, actively foraging for grass and bugs
  • They grow at a natural pace, developing deeper, richer flavor
  • They mate naturally and live longer, healthier lives
  • They preserve genetic diversity in an era of industrial monoculture

Our Pasture-Raising Protocol & Growing Schedule

Weeks 1-4 (Brooder): Turkey poults spend their first 4 weeks in a temperature-controlled brooder. This protects them when they're most vulnerable and gives them a strong, healthy start. During this time, they receive a no corn, no soy supplement to build a solid foundation.

Weeks 5-8 (Enclosed Turkey Tractor): At 4 weeks, they move into an enclosed protective turkey tractor. This keeps them safe from predators while giving them access to fresh grass and sunshine every day. The tractor is moved daily to fresh pasture. They continue to receive a no corn, no soy supplement while also foraging on:

  • Clover, grass, and forbs
  • Insects and grubs

Week 9+ (Free Range with Open Turkey Tractor): Once they're large enough to be less vulnerable to predators, they're allowed to free range on pasture with an open turkey tractor. The tractor remains available as shelter, but the birds are free to roam, forage, and act like turkeys. At this stage, they are truly pasture-raised — enjoying sunshine, fresh air, and plenty of space to move.

The Pasture Difference You Can Taste

Our pasture-raised heritage turkeys offer:

  • ✔ Deeper, richer flavor from diverse forage and slow growth
  • ✔ Firmer texture from daily movement on pasture
  • ✔ Cleaner fat from natural diet and sunshine
  • ✔ Peace of mind from humane, transparent practices

What to Expect

Heritage turkeys are different than conventional broad-breasted birds:

Heritage Turkey  vs Conventional

Breast shape:  Longer, more aerodynamic vs Wider, oversized

Dark meat: Abundant, rich vs Less pronounced

Cooking time:  Faster (leaner meat) vs Slower

Flavor:  Deep, complex vs Mild

Cooking tip: Because heritage turkeys are leaner and more active, they cook faster than grocery store birds.

Availability & Ordering

Our heritage turkeys will be ready for Thanksgiving and holiday orders. With only 9 birds available, reservations are limited.

Price: Contact for pricing (heritage breed, pasture-raised, no corn, no soy)

Pasture Raised Meat Rabbits

Raising Happy, Healthy Rabbits on Our Ranch

At our farm, we’re passionate about raising rabbits in a natural, sustainable way—ensuring they live a good life while providing high-quality meat for our family (and hopefully yours, too!). Since we’re just starting out with our breeding program, availability is limited, but we’re excited to grow our rabbitry responsibly.

Our Breeding Process

We currently have two breeding pairs, but only one pair is mature enough to produce litters right now. Here’s how our process works:

  1. Breeding – We introduce our doe (Momma) to our buck (Boy), and about 30 days later, we welcome a new litter of kits!
  2. Nesting & Early Care – Momma lives in a spacious 40"x30" cage, where she raises her babies in comfort. She’s fed a diet of organic, NON-GMO rabbit pellets along with fresh greens from our garden or chemical-free pasture.
  3. Growing Out – Once the kits are mobile and eating solid food, we move the whole family to our mobile rabbit tractor—a movable pen that gives them daily access to fresh grass, weeds, and sunshine. They still get supplemental rabbit feed to ensure balanced nutrition.

Why Pasture Matters

We believe rabbits thrive when they can forage naturally. Our rabbit tractors allow them to:

  • Graze on diverse greens
  • Enjoy fresh air and sunlight
  • Live in a low-stress, clean environment

This results in healthy, flavorful meat from rabbits that have lived active, natural lives.

Limited Availability – For Now!

Since we’re just starting out, rabbit numbers are limited, but we’re working to expand our breeding program. If you’re interested in reserving rabbits in the future, reach out via email, and we’ll keep you updated!

We’re committed to ethical, sustainable farming, and we’d love to share our journey with you. Thanks for supporting small-scale, pasture-based rabbitry! 🐇🌱

Letting pigs be pigs

Happy Pigs Living Their Best Life on Pasture

Here on our farm, we believe that happy, healthy pigs make the best pork—and these three little pigs (two boys and a girl) are living proof! They spend their days rooting, exploring, and playing in a half-acre of wooded pasture, where they can fully express their natural behaviors.

A Pig’s Life: Freedom, Foraging, and Fun

Our pigs enjoy:

  • Ample space to roam – Running, digging, and wallowing in the mud keeps them active, which builds strong muscles and enhances flavor.
  • A natural diet – They forage for acorns, roots, and grubs, supplemented with No corn and no soy 18% hog feed and table scraps for balanced nutrition.
  • No unnecessary medications – These pigs have never been vaccinated, never given antibiotics.

Why Pasture-Raised Pork Tastes Better

When pigs live stress-free lives outdoors, it shows in the meat:
✔ Rich, marbled texture from natural exercise
✔ Deep, savory flavor from a varied diet
✔ Clean, healthy fat from unprocessed feed

Availability & Processing

These pigs are already sold. We will be getting more in July.  We expect to take those pigs for processing in late January or early February 2027, so stay tuned for availability!
